If you have followed my journeys around Europe, you know I don’t like visiting tourist attractions because of the big crowds. I feel that they take away from the attraction itself. However, I am still a tourist, and I do enjoy learning about history and culture. So how do I visit these attractions without the massive crowds? Keep reading to find out.
1. Early Bird Gets the Worm
The best way to escape the crowds is to be the first one there. However, I have learned that no matter how early you arrive, someone else is going to arrive earlier. Most often these are influencers or photographers who are trying to minimize the number of people who will be in their photos. Even though you won’t be alone, getting to the destination early is one of the best ways to beat the crowd. I visited the Acropolis in Athens early when the gates opened along with a few hundred people. But just one hour later, when I was leaving, the number of tourists had increased greatly and the lines were packed (pictured). Just think about it– most people on vacation like to take their time in the morning. It’s part of what makes it a vacation!
2. Don’t Let the Weather Deter You
Watch the weather! Everyone wants a perfect picture and a perfect day; nice weather, sunny, few clouds. This means people are more likely to visit when the weather is nice. I always take advantage of the weather when it is cold or dreary, because there is always less of a crowd on those days. I visited Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland on a day when it was overcast and drizzling. It was beautiful! If anything, the dreary weather emphasized the waterfalls and beauty of nature. Of course I’d prefer a nice, sunny day, but most attractions are still as breathtaking in the rain.
3. Walk Away From the Crowds
Sometimes you just have to visit something else.I’m not saying you should skip the Parthenon or Roman Colosseum. Attractions like those will ALWAYS be busy, so your best bet is to be the first one in line. I’m talking about beaches, hikes, churches, etc. There always seems to be THAT ONE attraction that is super famous and everyone goes to it. If you are trying to get away from huge crowds, ask a local about a different one. Sometimes they know a thing or two. I’ve been on many beautiful hikes and seen many beautiful churches that were “hidden” and those are the ones I remember. This picture is of a small church in Oberammergau, Germany. Very unassuming from the outside, but beautiful and intricate on the inside.
4. Go in the off season
This is similar to the weather, but every destination has an off-season. For many places it will be the winter or summer, or both. This also means you should not plan a trip during spring break or during peak summer months when everyone is on vacation or break. If those are the only times that work for you, then go! Don’t let the crowds prevent you from planning a beautiful trip. Just don’t be surprised when there are hoards of people. If you do plan on visiting a popular attraction make sure you look into buying times and tickets ahead of time! Many attractions have a limited amount of slots per hour, and during peak months these will sell out fast!
Overall, crowds are inevitable. And there isn’t much you can do except admire how many people take interest in the same hobbies and things as you.
