About
Camelback Mountain is one of the most popular hikes in Phoenix, thanks to its proximity to downtown and beautiful 360° views of the city. However, many people underestimate the challenge of hiking it, and don’t know the difference between the two trails that lead you to the top. The trails are Echo Canyon trail and Cholla trail. In this post I will be breaking down the Cholla Trail.
Cholla Trail is considered extremely difficult. it has nearly 1,200 feet of elevation gain and difficult terrain near the top. At the beginning Cholla trail may seem relatively mellow, but don’t let that fool you. I see more people turn around on Cholla Trail than Echo Canyon.
Parking
Cholla Trail does not have a parking lot, so it is first come, first serve on N Invergorden Rd. Sometimes you will get lucky and get a spot near the trail head. Sometimes your hike will start at your car, an 1/8 mile away.
The Beginning
The trail starts off with a nice, wide path, and continues with steady incline and a few switchbacks. Here there are many smooth rock surfaces with dirt and sand resting on top. This could cause an issue to people not in proper footwear. Other than that, this section of the hike remains fairly easy.
The Difficult Part
There is a beautiful lookout about 3/4 to the summit. After this things become increasingly difficult. The rest of the hike will be very demanding and you will find yourself climbing on your hands and knees. This is where most people turn around. If you are not confident with scrambling, I suggest turning around at the viewpoint. If you are unsure if you can make it, I suggest taking it one step at a time until you find yourself at the top.
The view at the top is amazing. It is also where the two trails meet. I suggest going on a clear day, because you will be able to see the city and the surrounding mountains.
Don’t leave your snacks unattended at the top, or the chipmunks will get them.
Heading Back Down
Heading back down the mountain may seem like a difficult task, but I find it to be easier. If I get nervous I just sit down at the edge of the rock and scoot down to the next one. There is nothing embarrassing about scooting down the mountain.
Here is the data from my hike, out and back, with all my breaks and stops.
